Thank you!

I want to thank everyone for all the kind comments and email. I know a couple of you have called, but I'm just not answering the phone right now.

They said someone who works for me complained and said that what I was writing was creating a hostile work environment. I've been thinking about that all night. I haven't looked back through my archives, but I really can't think of anything that I wrote that would fit that description. I was always very positive about my company. And as far as I knew everyone from work who read my blog enjoyed it. Several even guest posted at one point.

Frankly, I think my bosses were snowed. What I think happened was that someone with an ax to grind brought all this up as an act of revenge. And maybe they didn't even want me to be fired, maybe they just wanted me to get in trouble.

I don't know. I could be wrong. It is just so frustrating not knowing, you know? They wouldn't give me any particulars beyond that.

I keep thinking they are going to call me and tell me they made a mistake and ask me to come back. I guess I'm still in a bit of shock. I've never been fired before, and I really thought I would retire there.

Six years of hard work and dedication to the cause of blood donation. Poof. At least I have the knowledge that my work helped a lot of people during those six years.

I made a trip out to my car with some personal belongings as I cleared out my office, and when I got back my computer was already gone. Nice.

Thanks again guys. I really mean it.

I can't get around it, just can't...I understand people can get offended, but they know you, they should have known that you could be approached and all this nonsense would not have happened. It could still happen that the person responsible makes a retraction. I sincerely hope so.
Companies are so afraid to get sued by anyone, they take the easiest stand. SHAME! They should tell you what you allegedly said that got you fired!

I'm guessing it was one of the (useless, underhanded, cowardly, craven) little chickies -- possibly even one who has guest-blogged. One tiny thing you wrote pissed her off/disgusted her, and she, in a fit of self-righteous and empty-headed indignation, tattled like a two-year-old, rather than cowboy up and talk to you about it personally.

"Hostile work environment" is code for, "Something has made someone uncomfortable, and they dont have the balls to deal, so we're being proactive."

Screw that noise. Would you want to work with cowards?

I'm round, should you need a (relatively) objective ear. I also run a resume seminar -- if you want to go over yours one-on-one and polish yours, e-mail me.

I don't get it . They can fire you because someone said something about you? Without confronting you beforehand? Without having any information or opinion of themselves whatsoever? Is it as easy as that? The fact that you are a loyal, hardworking employee does not mean anything?? I Do Not Get It. Not. At All.

I agree with the company handbook and see what it says. Most places have a 3 strikes rule, like a warning at least before termination! I re read some of your blog last night and I dont see how anyone could be offended. I would at least ask what it was, what particular post they are talking about.

Like I said before, what I get from your blog is that you are very dedicated to your job and a good husband. I think Lemurs might be offended but I dont think they read blogs. So sorry.

I still think you should look closer at other alternatives with them. Even if you are in an "at will employment" state they still really have to have (ggod) just cause. If it is all about the blog, they should have come to you and asked it to be removed. The blog is your private affair. At the worst they should have asked you to take it down, or made you sign an agreement not to speak of work...something. This smells verrrrry fishy...

I'm sorry this had to happen to you!

In the long run your company has done themselves a disservice by firing you. A hard, dedicated worker can be hard to find these days, not to mention your sense of humor that must have brightened up your office considerably. It sounds like they acted before they really thought about it. I have this fear that the same thing could happen to me over my blog as I work in education and some may just not get it. Oh well, I'm sending you some good vibes for your new job search and I know it's hard but don't let this get you down. You sound like a fun guy, keep the blog going and us bloggers posted.

If you truly want to find out the details of being let go, try filing a grievance with the Florida Department of Labor and Employment Security. State that you were let go but were not given the particular details of your dismissal. I know Florida, like most states, is an at-will state; ergo, you can be bounced and really not be given a reason. There are almost no laws (federal or state) that protects the rights and welfare of employees. That's why there are unions and unemployment.

If you don't care why, then file for unemployment and pray that your company weren't jerks and gave the state a "ineligible" reason for unemployment.

And if THAT happens, then I'd contact a lawyer. You might be questioned on why you didn't care what the reason was before you were denied. Just like anyone else, you didn't feel like adding to the headache.

This all seems like such bullshit. I can understand it if you slagged your company on your blog or other employees or if you were blogging during your work hours but to fire you over a blog that you write on your own time? The Thought Police are live and well and living in Florida.

What's next? Firing people for their perfectly legal porn stash? Getting fired because you spent some after work hours in a tittie bar? Maybe folks will start getting fired because they don't go to church or because of who they support politically because disagreeing with the moral attitudes (read: stick-up-their-ass viewpoints) creates a "hostile work environment". "I can't work with So-And-So because of his lifestyle and it creates a hostile work environment!"

Don't give up what you love because of the pointed head notions of others. Keep being yourself. You'll land on your feet yet.

Fab, I just don't get some employers. You were a hard-working, dedicated employee and it should have taken a lot more than someone complaining about your blog for them to up and fire you at a moment's notice. It's always better to hear both sides of the situation instead of making such a rash decision based on someone who, sniff sniff, possibly had their feelings hurt by something you may have written. And then you said they didn't really offer you a thorough explanation. That is the only thing I can think of that you would have a leg to stand on if you ever decided to sue them. The least they could have done was warned you first. A warning would be enough to set anyone straight. It certainly doesn't seem to me like grounds for firing you. You may or may not have a case but it's something you may want to at least explore.

However, you cannot sue a company succesfully simply for firing you over your blog because you're getting paid to work, not blog. Now I'm not making any accusations because I don't know if you ever blogged from work or not. From what I know, I don't think you did.

Fab, I used to work in media relations. Turning this into a public situation would be the worst thing you could do because the media embellishes everything and you will end up looking like a horse's ass when their done wiping up the floor with you. They will distort facts and twist words. They will make you feel very small. If that's something you want to pursue to get your message across, fine, but in the end you will probably feel humiliated.

You already know who I think the culprit is but I do think it's interesting that the people from that office who frequent your blog have nothing to say about the matter. I would have thought they would be here commenting and sharing their sorrow with the rest of us.

I was trying to think of any kind of reason as to how they might have fired you over your blog ... and well, office sabotage does sound like a possibility.

Is there anyone there that would benefit if you no longer worked there? As in perhaps get your job?

There's no way that there is anything that you said on this blog that might have been considered abusive to one of your co-workers. Yeah, you occasionally poked fun at them but it was always clear that it was a joke and that you really did like them.

What about other blogs that you guest posted on? Anything on any of them that might have turned one of your co-workers off?

I still can't believe that that this has happened to you. :(

I know that you will do fine in the long run and you'll probably end up with a job that you like as much or even better than this one.

Your bosses are IDIOTS for letting you go. It's too hard to find someone that actually does their job, is good at their job and loves it these days. It's really their lose.

And the Co-Worker that did this to you? They'll get theirs soon, very soon I'm sure.

I agree with SO many statements made here.

First of all, At Will/At Schmill. Eat shit, LifeSouth. Fab, you will win on the unemployment claim so long as you can say TWO Things...1) you were never written up for anything recently and 2) You were never given an actual SIGNED statement as to your termination.

I won a LONG LONG fight with a past employer who tried to dick me the same way. Turns out the bitch that got me fired was VERY threatened by me. She knew I could have had her job, IF I WANTED IT, and was out to get me before the heads and higher ups realized that she did a whole lot of nothing. She had them snowed, hard, but once I got there...everyone realized how little she did. She made the claim that she (get this...) "witnessed me stealing money from her purse".

I make TEN DOLLARS MORE AN HOUR THAN YOU DO, PSYCHO BIOTCH! Why would I steal your money???

Anyway, I fought and fought for nearly a year and then was given a nice fat ass check for wrongful termination AND big unemployment settlement/compensation.

Yeah. Who's better than the Princess, may I ask???

Don't you DARE rollover on this. Don't you dare take this laying down! Don't! Don't! Don't!

I've been wracking my brain as to what legitimate complaint someone who works *under* you could have about your blogging. ALL I can come up with is that, conceivably, it could created an uncomfortable atmosphere for someone who is a very private or socially conservative person, if they are in constant fear of something they say or do at work being posted for the whole world to see.

BUT--even if that were the case, all that would be required would be a simple, "Hey, Fab: Don't write about work any more. We really don't like it, and it could cause problems." To which I have no doubt you would have complied.

So, yeah. I agree with those who suspect a personal axe-grinding.

I'm sorry...but I don't think it's the fact that there was a blog....moreso that it was being done at work...during the time the company PAYS for HIS WORK time. :( I'm sorry, Fab. (I hate it that I always think so differently than the rest of the fucking world!)

I'm shocked! Admittedly I am not one of your most regular readers, but I know and adore Shelli and you and I get around and comment on some of the same blogs. These people and their lame "Hostile Working Environment" and they won't even tell what it was you said that is generating this supposed HWE.

There is a blogger-coined term for these folks... asshats.

CP you go girl! I agree with everything you are saying. Fab has to fight this!

Chelle - look at Mr. Fabs post times. He didn't write his posts at work. No, I think this was someone with an axe to grind, so Mr. Fab needs to fight back and fight back hard!

There's a lesson here: Don't. Ever. Tell. Anyone. That. You. Blog.

Got that person's address? I say, "The best defense is a strong offense." Alternatively, "revenge is a dish best served with fists."

Getting fired over your blogging is truly crap. From what I've read its not like your out there shitcanning your employer, co-workers or giving away the company's secrets or anything. While its terrible to be fired, at least console yourself with the thought that they must be arseholes to have done it, and why would you want to work for a pack of arseholes.

I've had trouble on jobs too - I've been fired from many. But I can't believe YOU were fired. You really have it all together, and it's their loss.

Let me know if you need anything, even if this message is after the fact.

OH MY GOD. I have missed your blog for a few days and this is what happens? Jesus, Fab, I am sooo sorry. You truly are fabulous and don't let "the man" get you down. I can't believe someone would do this to you.

Heard about what happened to you through another blog. If I didn't know better, what you wrote could have been written by me too. Exactly. Except I was there 13 years. I still don't know what went wrong and I suppose I never will. My husband still works there and for that I guess we can be thankful. I am gone over a year now and it took me a whole year to get over it somewhat. Hang in there...

Sorry I haven't been around the last week or so. I read about your firing when I was still visiting with Snackiepoo, but then went to the BlogHer conference and didn't read any blogs at all while I was there.

I have quite a few blog posts of yours to catch up on, but I'm reading them in order. So I just want to say that I hope you're doing okay, even if you are (probably) still in shock over this crap. Your name came up a number of times during BlogHer. You know, with Dooce being present and all.
